Prof. Yuan XIE has been named as Fang Professorship in Engineering

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the seventh inauguration ceremony of named professorships today to honor 10 outstanding faculty members and their donors.

Prof. Yuan XIE has been named Fang Professorship in Engineering.

Chair Professor, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering

As a leader and innovator in the fields of computer science and engineering, Professor Yuan Xie, Fang Professor of Engineering, has won international acclaim for his distinguished contribution.

After graduating with a B.S. in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University, Professor Xie obtained an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Princeton University. Remaining in the U.S., he gained invaluable industry experience at IBM Microelectronics and AMD Research and was appointed Professor in Computer Science Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. He also served as Distinguished Engineer and Chief Scientist at Alibaba’s DAMO Academy.

In 2014, Professor Xie joined the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he founded the Scalable Energy-Efficient Architecture Lab (SEAL). Under his capable leadership, the SEAL research team broke new ground in computer design and architecture, focusing on technology-driven and application-driven innovations in areas ranging from emerging memory technologies to novel bioinformatics and virtual reality/augmented reality applications.

This pioneering work was underpinned and informed by Professor Xie’s expertise in computer architecture, very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design and electronic design automation (EDA)—topics on which he has authored four books and published more than 300 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)/ Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) journal/conference papers to date.

In recognition of these distinguished scholarly contributions, Professor Xie has received numerous honors, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, the IBM Faculty Award, the Semiconductor Research Corporations (SRC) Inventor Recognition Award, and many best paper awards at IEEE and ACM conferences. He was also inducted to the Hall of Fame in the world’s premier computer architecture conferences (ISCA, MICRO and HPCA). In 2020, he received the prestigious Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award for his role in the development of technology-driven computer architecture and tools for its implementation and evaluation.

Professor Xie’s contribution to the field is not limited to the production of research. He actively serves the design automation, VLSI and computer architecture community in roles such as chairperson and committee member for leading conferences in these areas. He held the post of Editor-in-Chief for the ACM Journal of Emerging Technologies in Computing Systems and has served on the editorial boards of prestigious journals such as IEEE Transactions on CAD and IEEE Transactions on VLSI. He is a Fellow of IEEE, ACM, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science

With a career combining award-winning, impactful research on emerging and future technologies with stewardship of and service to the scholarly community, Professor Xie is ideally suited to the role of Fang Professor of Engineering.
