Postgraduate Admissions

The Department offers postgraduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electronic and Computer Engineering. Full-time and part-time options are available for both MPhil and PhD degrees. The normal study load for full-time MPhil/PhD students is 10 credits per regular term whereas the maximum study load for those in part-time mode is 8 credits per term. We also offer a number of self-financing Master of Science (MSc) programs.

 

Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the MPhil or PhD program are required to have completed, by the time they enter HKUST, a Bachelor's degree in Electronic and/or Computer Engineering or a related science or engineering field with high honors. Admission to the postgraduate program will be based on the applicants' academic record and research potential.

TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for non-local applicants whose primary language is not English and whose degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English. Applicants are advised to submit: Originals of qualification documents (e.g. transcripts) and other supporting documents should be submitted directly to HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School (FYTGS) for verification and records.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

Established in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme aims at attracting the best and brightest students from around the world to pursue doctoral studies in Hong Kong. Eligible applicants are those seeking admission as new full-time PhD research candidates in Government-funded institutions in Hong Kong irrespective of their country of origin and ethnic background. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding academic performance, and good research ability and potential.

The Scheme is now open for applications, admitting research postgraduates to conduct cross-disciplinary research under four hubs - Function, Information, Society and Systems.
