The State Key Laboratory

Established in 2013, The State Key Laboratory* of Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies (SKL-ADT) aims to be a leading display and optoelectronics research center in China, to develop advanced displays and optoelectronic technologies through industrial and market collaborations.  Frontier areas of interest include large-area and flexible electronics, sensing technologies, quantum information processing, etc. The lab also serves as an international platform for exchanging display and optoelectronics research.  Over the years, SKL-ADT has successfully developed various cutting-edge and highly industrial-applicable display technologies and serves as a conduit in providing engineering research and support to the industry.  SKL-ADT, which is expanding with an aggressive development plan on its leading-edge areas, currently has more than 15 faculty members and around 30 research/technical/admin staff.  With significant annual funding, SKL-ADT is well-fitted out with dedicated space and equipment.  

*The State Key Laboratory (SKL) Scheme is one of the major national technology development schemes managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) established in 1984.  SKLs are top state-funded laboratories that conduct innovative basic and applied research tied to national priority and have simultaneously achieved the national level of excellence.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice-President for Research and Development, the Director of SKL-ADT is expected to provide leadership and manage the Laboratory in its diverse research and educational functions.  With the base in Hong Kong, the appointee will lead and manage the large research infrastructure and operation, initiating and establishing research collaborations amongst HKUST (Clearwater Bay campus), HKUST (Guangzhou campus), government and industrial counterparts,  fostering the recruitment of faculty and staff.

Terms & Applications / Nominations

The appointment will be concurrent with a substantive professorial appointment with the academic unit(s).  The initial term of directorship will be 3 years, renewable upon mutual agreement.  Competitive remuneration and generous fringe benefits, including housing where appropriate, will be provided.  Outstanding faculty joining the university will be considered for nomination of the Global STEM Professorship Scheme sponsored by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  Awardees under the Scheme will be offered a highly competitive package to establish his/her research program in Hong Kong, including the setup of first-rate laboratories and recruitment of research support personnel.

Applications/nominations for the position are invited from well-qualified and accomplished scholars.  In addition to reputable academic qualifications, extensive teaching and research experience, the successful candidate must have demonstrated capability to provide strong leadership at the tertiary level.  Proven capacity to interact effectively with government, industry and commercial sectors is an advantage.

Faculty Positions in Electronic and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions at Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor ranks.  The department consists of a large number of faculty conducting research in cutting-edge technologies such as biomedical data science, biomedical imaging/devices, quantum technology, smart cities, big data, autonomous systems, Internet of Things, and beyond 5G wireless networks in a wide scope of fields including biomedical engineering, solid-state electronics and photonics; integrated circuits and systems; control and robotic systems; data science and AI; and wireless communications and networking.

 

The Department is interested in outstanding candidates in all ECE related areas and particularly in Digital and analog integrated circuits; Systems/Control; Networking; and Quantum Engineering.

 

The School of Engineering at HKUST has launched an aggressive global search to attract internationally renowned scholars and their teams to work in Hong Kong.  Distinguished applicants at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor joining the School will be considered for the nomination of the Global STEM Professorship Scheme supported by the Hong Kong Government, which offers additional support to aid the awardees to scale new heights in teaching and research activities.

 

Applicants should have a PhD with demonstrated strength in research and commitment to teaching. Successful candidates are expected to lead active research programs and teach both graduate and undergraduate courses.  An interdisciplinary knowledge and application of different disciplines will be an advantage.

Salary is highly competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits include medical/dental benefits and annual leave.  Housing benefits, including on-campus housing, will be provided where applicable.  Substantial support is also provided to faculty in terms of first-rate research facilities, equipment, and research postgraduate studentship.  For appointment at Assistant Professor level, initial appointment will normally be on a three-year contract.  A gratuity will be payable upon completion of contract.
