Prof. Yansong YANG Led Joint French Research Project Awarded ANR/RGC Grant to Advance Lithium Niobate Microelectronics

A joint research team led by Prof. Yansong YANG and Prof. Fabrice STHAL (SUPMICROTECH) has been awarded funding under the French National Research Agency (ANR) / Research Grants Council (RGC) Joint Research Scheme 2026/27, one of only six projects selected to enhance French-Hong Kong research collaboration. Their project, “Lithium Niobate-on-Sealed-Cavity (LNoSC) Platform for Next-Generation Acoustic Microsystems,” aims to replace traditional, defect-prone thin-film bonding methods by using Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) to grow lithium niobate directly on silicon substrates with engineered vacuum cavities.
By eliminating bonding constraints and establishing a scalable CVD framework, this breakthrough could pave the way for compact, low-loss microelectronics used in 6G and satellite communications, low-noise frequency sources, high-resolution ultrasound imaging, and integrated photonic chips. Prof. YANG, an expert in ultrasonic and RF MEMS who earned his PhD from UIUC, joined HKUST in 2022.
