Prof. Qiming SHAO Won UCLA Distinguished PhD Dissertation Award in Physical and Wave Electronics
Professor Qiming SHAO is joining the ECE department this summer. Prof. SHAO obtained his PhD degree from University of California, Los Angeles early this year. His dissertation work on “magnetic memory with topological insulators and magnetic insulators” has been awarded as UCLA distinguished PhD dissertation in Physical and Wave Electronics in year 2018-2019.
Each year, UCLA ECE Distinguished PhD dissertation awards recognize the best PhD dissertations in three major research areas, Circuit and Embedded Systems (CES), Physical and Wave Electronics (PWE) and Signals and Systems (SS). Only one award is given in one area.
Under the supervision of Prof. Kang L. Wang, Distinguished Professor and Raytheon Chair in UCLA ECE, Prof. SHAO’s dissertation works address the need of emerging memory for big data and quantum technology as described in the following. Ubiquitous smart devices and internet of things create tremendous data every day, shifting computing diagram towards data-driven. Computing and memory units in traditional computers are physically separated, which leads to huge energy cost and time delay. Novel computer architectures bring computing and memory units together for data-intensive applications. These memory units need to be fast, energy efficient, scalable and nonvolatile. Prof. SHAO’s dissertation concerns innovating new types of magnetic memory or spintronic devices to achieve ultrahigh energy efficiency and ultracompact size from a perspective of material and heterostructure design. Especially, he employs quantum materials to enable potentially unprecedented technological advances. The study on quantum materials may also provide the foundations for future quantum information technology.
