Prof. Mansun CHAN has been Selected for the School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award 2018-19
Prof. Mansun CHAN, Alex Wong Siu Wah Gigi Wong Fook Chi Professor of Engineering and Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, has been selected for the School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award 2018-19. The selection of Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award takes place every year to recognize the dedication of academic staff members in excellence of teaching.
Prof. CHAN developed online and blended versions of the course ELEC3500: Microelectronic Devices and Technology. He first launched the MOOC version of this course in May 2018 to over 6000 students worldwide. He then used the videos developed for this course to implement Flipped Classroom Blended Learning in ELEC3500 at HKUST to 81 students in Fall 2018. Students clearly appreciated the excellent quality videos, as well as the good balance between outside and inside classroom work, which enabled students to focus on different aspects of the work, such as knowledge acquisition versus skill acquisition.
Furthermore, Prof. CHAN has brought engineering to secondary school students. He regularly offers courses to Hong Kong primary and secondary school students via the Center for the Development of the Gifted and Talented, the Academy for Bright Future Young Engineers (ABFYE) and the HKUST Summer Institute. Prof. CHAN initiated the IEEE Electronic Camp which has become an annual event attracting over 100 participants in Hong Kong and has spread to Shenzhen, Beijing and San Diego. He also started the IEEE Electronic Endeavor Match in April 2017 which has become an annual competition for primary school and secondary school students to compete in breadboard circuit construction.
