TLE MPhil Student Received Best Presentation Award at the 5th International Conference on Communications and Future Internet (ICCFI 2021)

Kwong Chiu FUNG, TLE MPhil student of Prof. Wai Ho MOW, received the Best Presentation Award at the 5th International Conference on Communications and Future Internet (ICCFI 2021).

Kwong Chiu Fung, Wai Ho Mow, Kam Hei Au, Yim To Mok and Ho Yin Chim,  “Development and Product Trials of a Cost-effective Cloud-based Thermal-camera-based Body Temperature Measurement System,” The 5th International Conference on Communications and Future Internet (ICCFI 2021), Singapore, July 16-18, 2021.

The paper aims to share the development and product trial experience of the startup team  "Thermal Plus" led by Mr. FUNG and advised by Prof. MOW. Mr. Kam Hei AU is a former ECE FYP students who graduated in 2020 and Mr. Ho Yin CHIM is currently a CSE student.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, body temperature monitoring is an effective measure to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading in the community. Two common ways to measure body temperature in public settings include non-contact infrared thermometers and thermal imaging systems. The use of non-contact infrared thermometers involves physical proximity, additional manpower and time, whereas the existing thermal imaging systems are either inaccurate or expensive. To address the above problems, the team present an accurate and low-cost automatic fever screening system to assist in preliminary health assessment. The system involves the integration of a RGB camera, a thermal camera, an embedded system board, and a cloud analytics platform. By utilizing temperature measurement and face detection, the system can extract forehead temperature and assess if the person being evaluated is wearing a mask or not. The system has conducted trial runs in various crowded settings including schools, restaurants, community centres, and commercial buildings. In this study, the team manage to lower the cost of developing an effective self-checking station for fever screening by hardware trade-off and software optimization, resulting in a market acceptance price. This makes the solution widely accessible to serve the local community during the COVID-19 period.

ICCFI 2021 serves as an annual platform to gather researchers and practitioners from around the world who are developing or involving in Communications and Future Internet fields with attendant economic, environmental, and societal benefits.
