ECE Faculty and Students Complete 100km Oxfam Trailwalker Race to Showcase HKUST Spirit and Celebrate 100 Years of the conception of Field Effect Transistors
On November 15th, ECE faculty and students participated in the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker Race, forming two teams for the event. The first team included Professor Mansun Chan and three of his students: Huimin Zheng, Songcen Xu, and Jinchen Wei. The second team was led by Professor Qiming Zhao and comprised three academics from partner universities.
Despite challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain that caused nearly half of the participants to withdraw, both teams successfully completed the race in its entirety, finishing in 36 hours and 45 minutes and 44 hours and 13 minutes, respectively. This demanding event required team members to support and motivate one another, exemplifying the "Can-Do Spirit," one of HKUST's core values.
Coincidentally, the coming year marks the 100th anniversary of the conception of Field Effect Transistors (FETs). The team members also used this occasion to celebrate this significant technological breakthrough that has transformed modern life. Many systems utilized during the event, including tracking systems, owe their functionality to the advancements made possible by FETs. The 100km race serves as a reminder of the century-long journey of FETs and their profound impact on society.
Oxfam Trailwalker (https://www.oxfamtrailwalker.org.hk/) is a one of the largest fundraising events in Hong Kong where teams of participants walk a long-distance trail, typically 100 kilometers, within a set time limit. The event raises money for Oxfam's work in tackling poverty and social injustice. Teams often train together and seek sponsorship to support their efforts, making it both a physical challenge and a way to contribute to a good cause.
