PhD Student LIAO Zebing Wins Ying Family PhD Research Award

Congratulation to our Year 5 PhD student LIAO Zebing, who has been awarded the Ying Family PhD Research Award in recognition of his outstanding research on sustainable display technologies.
LIAO presented his work on “Efficient Quantum-Dot LEDs for Sustainable Micro-Displays”, which focuses on developing energy efficient light emitting diodes for next generation micro display applications.
In his acceptance remarks, he expressed gratitude to Mr. Ying, the HKUST Energy Institute, his supervisor Prof. Abhishek Kumar SRIVASTAVA (Associate Professor, Electronic and Computer Engineering), and his teammates for their continued support.
The award was presented at a ceremony on 24 July 2026, jointly organized by the HKUST Energy Institute (EI), the Office of Knowledge Transfer (OKT), and the Development and Alumni Office (DAO).
The prize was conferred by Mr. Steven YING, Director of the Foundation for Amazing Potentials, and Prof. SHAO Minhua, Director of the HKUST Energy Institute, Cheong Ying Chan Professor of Energy Engineering and Environment, and Head and Chair Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
About the Award
Launched in 2025 by the HKUST Energy Institute, the Ying Family PhD Research Award(應家族博士生傑出研究獎) is supported by a generous donation from the Foundation for Amazing Potentials, founded by Mr. Steven YING, Managing Partner of High Impact Capital Advisors.
The award recognizes PhD students who have demonstrated exceptional research performance and achievements in areas such as sustainability, environmental studies, energy technology, green technology, or related disciplines.
Each recipient receives a one off cash prize of HK$50,000 to support their ongoing research.
