A Research Led by Members of BioMD Laboratory is Highlighted in the Journal of Microelecromechanical Systems

Journal of Microelecromechanical Systems (JMEMS), the long-running prestigious journal on the topic of MEMS, identifies two or three papers of each issue of excellent quality and highlights them as JMEMS RightNow Papers to a large community of readers and grants open access for a limited time.

In the October 2021 issue of JMEMS, the paper led by PhD students Mr. Sheng NI and Mr. Yang BU, members of the BioMD Laboratory, has been selected one of the three papers that deserve such distinction.  The students are supervised by Prof. Levent YOBAS.

“A Sub-nL Chip Calorimeter and Its Application to the Measurement of the Photothermal Transduction Efficiency of Plasmonic Nanoparticles” by Sheng Ni, Yang Bu, Hangliang Zhu, Pavel Neuzil, and Levent Yobas. Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems. 30, 5, 759, 2021. https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9494100.

The paper reports a chip calorimeter for differential measurements of aqueous samples with a sample handling capacity of sub-nL, one of the smallest reported among the chip calorimeters of an enclosed type. The paper further demonstrates the chip calorimeter utility on the measurement of the photothermal transduction efficiency of plasmonic nanoparticles, which makes the study further unique in expanding the applications of chip calorimeters. Calorimetry is a universal technique used in various disciplines for directly measuring enthalpy change or heat flow during physical or chemical processes to determine thermodynamic characteristics of these processes. The paper is a collaborative work with researchers from the Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi’an.
