HKUST Robotics Team once again secured Championship in the Hong Kong Regional IET/MATE Underwater Robot Challenge 2017

ECE students KAPUR Akshay, NADHIF Mohammad Hanif Dean and TANUBRATA Hans Ryan were part of the HKUST Robotics Team of 15 engineering students (5 SENG, 4 CSE, 1 CPEG, 3 ECE & 2 MECH) that once again secured the Championship of the Hong Kong Regional IET/MATE Underwater Robot Challenge 2017 on 23 April at Tseung Kwan O Swimming Pool.  The ROV sub-team will represent Hong Kong to take part in the MATE International ROV Competition which will be held in Long Beach, California, USA in late June.

In this regional competition, there were over 60 teams from secondary schools and universities which came from Hong Kong, Macau and China.  Although the weather was bad, HKUST team performed very well.  HKUST got the champion of Explorer Class (University Level) and it will be the seven consecutive years that HKUST represents Hong Kong to take part in the international competition.

The HKUST Robotics team is always encouraged to integrate engineering knowledge in community projects.  This time, the ROV team co-operated with IET Hong Kong to develop an electronic grading system for the Ranger Class (Secondary School Level).

The team also provided a different learning experience for junior students from 24 schools through guiding the students to build underwater robots in the IET Hong Kong Experience Class held in the afternoon of 23 April at Tseung Kwan O Swimming Pool.

The HKUST ROV sub-team is now improving their robot and will proceed to the international competition in June.
