HKUST ECE Researchers Outline Vision for Reasoning-Empowered 7G Networks

An HKUST ECE research team led by Prof. Khaled B. LETAIEF — alongside Prof. Shenghui SONG, Prof. Jun ZHANG, Research Assistant Professor Dr. Zixin WANG, and PhD candidates Songjie XIE and Hongru LI — has proposed a Reasoning-Empowered Task-Oriented Communication (TOC) framework for 7G networks.
The research, titled “Towards Reasoning-Empowered Task-Oriented Communication for Agent Networks”, was published in the prestigious academic journal npj Wireless Technology. The proposed framework allows AI agents to determine what, when, and why to communicate. Rather than just transmitting raw data, it enables collective intelligence across autonomous systems such as self-driving vehicles, smart cities, and healthcare platforms.
Key Features of the Cognitive Loop:
- Intent Interpretation: Converts high-level objectives into actionable communication goals.
- Automated Formulation & Optimization: Balances bandwidth, power, latency, and robustness dynamically.
- Proactive Foresight: Uses an internal "world model" to anticipate environmental and task changes before network performance degrades. While not yet a technical standard, the framework offers a strategic roadmap for 7G research, addressing fundamental challenges in multi-agent coordination, AI trustworthiness, and communication-reasoning stability.
