ECE PhD student, Mr. Pak-Ming Cheung has just won the first runner-up award (in the area of IT innovation) in "Challenge Cup National Competition - Hong Kong Regional Final" on 22 June 2016 with his innovation on "Art Pieces Recommendation using Multimedia Big Data Analytics".
The competition has been co-organized by Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association (HKNGCA) and HKSTP to provide an opportunity for academic exchanges and also a platform for the search of innovative talents from the tertiary institutions in Hong Kong.
In the final round of judging, there were more than 20 teams from different local universities to compete in the same area. Mr. Cheung’s innovation is a scalable and real-time multimedia big data analytic system that can tell users some details about an art piece and locate other similar pieces in terms of genre and content.
In addition to this award, Mr. Cheung and Prof. James SHE from ECE recently received a funding under Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) from ITC to kick off a technology startup company - MultiMedia Big Data Analytics Limited, based on their research team’s discoveries and patent-file technologies to offer individuals, enterprises and governments FREE or affordable advanced image-based analytics and data as a service.
TSSSU under the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) has been set up to provide an annual funding of HK$24 million to six local universities, and to encourage students and professors to start technology businesses and commercialise their R&D results.
