Professor Wong was born in Beijing, China. He attended secondary schools in Hong Kong and completed his tertiary education in the US. From 1979 to 1984, he was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he obtained his BS and MS degrees, both in Electrical Engineering. From 1985 to 1988, he was at Stanford University, where he obtained his PhD degree, also in Electrical Engineering. He worked at the Semiconductor Process and Design Centre of Texas Instruments in Dallas from 1988 to 1992, before joining the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
 
Professor Wong is a member of IEEE, the SID, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Sigma Xi. He has ten patents granted and four pending.
